WhatsApp Might Add New Message Reactions

A report has appeared stating that WhatsApp is likely working on increasing its range of available message reactions. Previously, users could only pick one of six emojis. According to the report, however, more are currently under development, targeting primarily WhatsApp beta testers who work on Android devices. There’s no details at present as to what reactions the instant messaging platform that’s part of the Meta group is going to add to its line at present. It’s important to note that the message reaction feature as such wasn’t available in WhatsApp, unlikely in other Meta-owned messengers, until about a month ago, which probably explains the lack of clarity around it.

According to WABetainfo, a WhatsApp feature reviewer that focuses on spotting pottential additions to the existing functionality, there’s going to be a plus sign next to the existing emojis which will lead to the new ones. Currently, you only have a thumb-up reaction, a heart, a thankful empji, and emotions such as laughing, sadness, and surprise to choose from. The + sign next to them will likely let you choose another reaction from a bigger list upon tapping on it. WABetainfo specifies that there is no specific information as to what kind of emojis this might include or when the feature will finally release. Overall, it looks like we might need to wait until we can see it on our devices.

There’s been speculation that WhatsApp users might be able to choose any emoji from the huge list you can use in messages to use as a reaction. This is already true for Facebook and Instagram, which are also owned by Meta. Apart from the Android reactions test, WhatsApp is currently testing message reactions for its desktop version.
